Baby Wearing - Key Benefits & Advice
Friday, 9 October 2015
Carrying your baby or child in a purpose made baby carrier is certainly not a new concept by any means and has been done for generations before with proven benefits for both parent and baby. Even so however, with so many options available on the market it can sometimes be a little daunting for new parents looking to find the right option to suit their baby and lifestyle. Finding the right carrier is very important not only for your baby but also ergonomically for the person wearing it. At Cherish Me all of our Baby Carriers have been hand picked and tested by ourselves to ensure that they offer an optimum ergonomic and safe carrying position for your baby while also allowing the wearer plenty of comfort and free movement.
So what are the advantages of baby wearing?
Practicality: Firstly, as any parent will know, carrying your baby around with one hand in a heavy plastic car seat or pushing a buggy around a busy shopping centre can be very strenuous and at times a bit of a challenge. With a baby carrier however, you have the freedom to carry your baby around (effectively hands free) and with the correct carrier this can be a very comfortable and relaxing experience for both yourself and your child.
Convenience: If you are the outdoor type, a baby carrier also allows you the flexibility to venture out to places not normally suitable for a buggy which is a great way for your child to experience the outdoors and from your level of view. As many baby carriers are suitable for ages up to 3yrs old, once they reach that ‘Independent’ toddler age and prefer to run about on their own, the compact light weight design of a baby carrier makes it very easy to carry around the park, ready to call on if their little legs get too tired to make it back to the car park. This is far less strenuous than trying to carry your child by hand as most good baby carriers are ergonomically designed to spread your baby’s weight to reduce strain on your back and shoulders.
Bonding: While there is no doubt around the physical practicalities of a baby carrier, having your child positioned close to your chest can be very reassuring for them, especially if they are quite nervous as it allows them to feel your body warmth and heart beat and can be an excellent way to encourage parent and baby bonding – especially in the younger years. Many parents also find using a baby carrier can be a great way to settle their child if they are upset or tired.
Different types of Baby Carrier:
Now that you know about some of the key benefits of using a baby carrier, before you consider investing in one it's a good idea to be familiar with the two main types of carriers and some of the pro's and cons of each.
Baby Wrap (or Baby Slings): A baby wrap is a specially cut length of fabric designed to effectively hold and swaddle your baby around your body. Baby wraps are very comfortable for your child due to their soft fabric design and positioning (similar sensation as being in the womb). Because they are made entirely from fabric they can also be discretely worn throughout the day ready to use whenever needed.
Buckle Carrier: Similar in principle to a baby wrap carrier however a buckle carrier is generally more structured and in many cases can carry children of a larger size. While many are suitable from newborn, they are ideal for babies from 6 Months + , due to their more upright carrying position.
Choosing a Carrier - Suggestions:
When deciding on a carrier it's a good idea to consider how it will be used, for example do you plan to use it outdoors a lot? how long do you plan to use it for? If you will be using it just for the first few months, then a baby wrap may be more suitable. If your child is 3 months or older however you may get more use out of a carrier in the long run.
You could also consider a 'Carrier Bundle' - i.e a wrap and a carrier together. Carrier bundles are cheaper and offer both parents a choice of carrier as well as being the ideal choice if you plan to carry your baby from newborn right up to toddler stage - Best of both worlds.
